Flappy Bird gets an update on iOS – Get new birds, night time mode and more!

For the longest time, Flappy Bird on iOS and Flappy Bird on Android were two very different animals. Just today, though, Dong Nguyen and .GEARS finally put out the Flappy Bird update on the iOS, bringing it in line with the Android version of the game. There are quite a few difference between the old and new iOS versions of Flappy Bird, including the following:

-You can play as more than one bird now. Not that you have to do anything to unlock the birds, or that this free-to-play game has somehow now gone freemium, which would probably destroy the appeal of the whole thing. Instead, you’ll randomly find yourself playing as a palette-swapped version of the same bird. Right now, a blue one and a red one pop up, as does the original yellow bird.

-You can now play in night time mode. This isn’t something you unlock either. Just like the brand new birds, this is a mode that randomly pops up. If you want to make night time mode happen, just keep crashing and restarting until you get it.

-The frame rate is VASTLY improved over the previous iOS version, although it now falls in line with the Android version. It’s up from 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second now, which makes it far easier to judge your bird’s position and distance from the pipe.

-Collision detection is also improved. That means less lame deaths where you didn’t really hit the pipe, but you crash anyways.

Add these all up, and not only do you have far better visuals, but you have a fairer, and slightly less frustrating scoring system. Make no mistake, though, it’s still as difficult as it was before. This should be no surprised to you if you have a friend who’s got an Android and plays the game, though.
