Complete quests and explore new areas. As you complete more quests, new areas will be pointed out to you by the game, where you can encounter tougher zombies, new types of resources, and rescue survivors in order to bring them back to your camp. Your goal is to clear and explore the entire area so that your world can be safe once again.
As you complete more quests, purchase more upgrades, and get further into the game, you will be able to unlock new buildings such as the garage. Typically you will have to pay a mixture of gold coins, scrap metal, and wood in order to build them, but the expense is worth it in order to get new vehicles and weapons.
When you are battling against zombies, your best bet for survival is generally to keep it a little bit of a distance and shoot them from far away, but to stay close enough to them that you can still fire off your shots. Later in the game, though, some zombies will have projectile attacks, meaning that you will have to strategize better in order to avoid them, and make greater use of your base in order to recover your health.
