You can unlock new moves for your Pokemon, all kinds of new game modes with bigger and tougher challenges, and earn gold coins and gems while managing your energy usage. The tutorial is insanely long, but as you get through it not only will you unlock more play modes, but you’ll also unlock automatic mode, which allows battles to finish and your characters to finish them automatically. Use this most of the time unless you really love fighting manually, as both standard attacks and special skills will fire off automatically.

Once you get to tougher battles later on in the game, though, you will want to take control of your character again. Your companion Pokemon will still be automatically controlled but you’ll be in control of your main one. The main strategy to use here is hit-and-run, so that you can avoid the boss’s attacks and take a shot at them whenever you are able to do so safely.

Keep fighting through the main battles and gaining experience levels, and you’ll keep gaining player levels. The more player levels you gain, the more stuff you’ll unlock. First unlock will be the arena, that allows you to compete against other players using Pokemon teams. Golden Coast unlocks at level 10 and then you have everything from Snatch Mode, CS Interaction War, Crystal Defense, Rocket Corps, Treasure Raiders, Chaotic Dungeon, Element Adventure, Plant, Guild War, League Contest, Land of Trial, Ancient Relics, Pokemon Gym, and Trial Tower, with even more coming as updates are added to the game.

As player levels increase you’ll also be able to upgrade your equipment, your skills, and more. Your upgrades max out at your player level so as you level up, you can upgrade your equipment and skills even further. Ordinarily there’s a lot going on to try to remember, but the game makes it easy by allowing you to click fast upgrade to level everything up quickly. If you want to conserve your upgrade materials, though, you can do each upgrade manually and upgrade only your rarest pieces of equipment.

You can upgrade your trainer in many different ways as well, both performance-based and cosmetic. One of these is by getting new uniforms, which there are a ton of for each character. You can even switch trainers and trainer avatars, which mostly require in-app purchases to do. The new uniforms require using a lot of gems, but if you’re really good at saving your gems, you can get the new outfits without having to spend any real-life money.
