Pokémon GO has you going around the real world, collecting rare Pokémon and leveling up so that you can find even rarer and more powerful creatures, but at some point, the bone-stock Poké Balls become to weak to catch what you find. Luckily, there are three higher tiers of balls to collect. Great Balls, Ultra Balls, and Master Balls are more powerful, and you can switch to them whenever you need to in order to get the rare and legendary Pokémon (especially using the Pokemon Go Ingress cheat). Read on to find out how to get Great Balls, Ultra Balls and Master Balls in Pokémon GO!
At the beginning of the game, you won’t have any Great Balls, Ultra Balls or Master Balls available to you. Not in the store, not in the game itself, nothing. The reason is that certain items are locked until you increase your experience level high enough to open them up. Before certain levels, you’ll hardly find Pokémon that are powerful enough to require the three higher-tier balls. As you level up you will find a bigger variety of Pokemon.
Level up to the right experience level to find the better balls. Once you hit level 12, you will earn a reward of 20 Great Balls, and then every level that you gain up to level 19, you will earn free great balls as a bonus. At level 20, you’ll unlock Ultra Balls, and then every level that you gain after that, you will earn free Ultra Balls as a bonus.
Once you hit the appropriate level, you will be able to find these upgraded balls at the same Pokéstops as you can find every other item. You’ll also start earning them as level bonuses, just like you earn Poké balls as level bonuses at the lower experience levels.
Use Lucky Eggs as often as you can, because they earn you double the experience for half an hour after you use them. Use them so that you can again levels rapidly so that you can not only unlock the Great and Ultra balls, but so that you can earn them more quickly as level bonuses.
If you are still waiting on unlocking a higher-tier ball, use the various techniques available for increasing your catch rate. Getting the Nice, Excellent or Great bonus has been shown to improve your catch rate. Landing the hit with a small circle size improves the catch rate. Throwing a curveball also improves the catch rate. So can use of the Razzberry. Doing all four of these can allow you to catch extremely rare and high-CP Pokémon with crappy Pokeballs until you unlock something better.
