Pokémon Go may not be a Pokémon game in the traditional sense, but it is still important to have a strong team of Pokémon at your disposal. To do this, you have to increase their CP, or combat points. Power up your Pokémon so that you can go to gyms, fight battles, and win, but you will need to power up and evolve your Pokémon first using Stardust and Candy. Read on to find out how to have a powerful Pokémon team in Pokémon GO!
To power up a Pokémon, you need Stardust. Stardust is not Pokémon-specific, meaning that there is only one type of Stardust, and it is earned whenever you catch a Pokémon. When you have enough Stardust, you can power up a Pokémon which levels them up and increases their combat points. Combat points come into play in the gym environment, as battles can often be decided merely by who has more combat points.
This is why it’s important to not only catch new Pokémon, but to catch duplicate Pokémon as well. Each Pokémon that you catch, whether it be a new one or a duplicate, will give you Stardust. In addition, they will give you an item that is just as important – maybe even moreso, and that is Candy.
Candy is required in order to evolve your Pokémon. You need a lot more candy for evolution than you need stardust for power ups. Candy is also Pokémon-specific, meaning that you can only earn more candy by catching duplicates of a specific Pokémon. Keep catching duplicates until you have what is needed to evolve your Pokémon, assuming that they have an evolution chain (some, such as Mew and Mewtwo, do not).
After you successfully evolve a Pokémon, their position on the CP curve will stay the same, so if you are at a low level, save your stardust and don’t power people up yet as you can and will catch higher-CP Pokemon all the way up until around level 20. You will use the same type of candy as before so you can catch the lower evolutions of your Pokémon and use their candy to power up and (if applicable) evolve it further.
At some point you are going to have to get rid of some of your Pokémon in order to make room for more. Go to the Pokémon’s profile page, scroll all the way down to the transfer button. This transfers a Pokémon to the professor permanently, meaning that you lose them, but you will earn one of that Pokémon’s candies instead. So transfer away unneeded Pokémon if you need to get some more candy.
