Pokémon will randomly pop up on your map – using incense will cause more of them to come to you. When it does pop up, tap it and throw Pokéballs at it until you catch it. When you do catch one, you will also acquire Stardust, which is used to power up a Pokémon and increase its combat points (CP), as well as candy, which is Pokémon-specific and is used for evolving your Pokémon.
If you need more Pokéballs, incense, or any other item, go to the map and look for the blue crystals, which represent Pokéstops. Go to a Pokéstop and open the picture and spin the coin for a random drawing of items. This includes incense, eggs, lure modules, and various forms of Pokéballs, including the Master Ball, which can catch any Pokémon on the first try.
You have to be level 5 and up to battle in a gym. When you’re battling, keep in mind the elements that apply to your Pokémon, which are the same as they were in the original games. So for example, a fire type beats a grass type, which beats a water type, and so on and so forth. You battle by tapping to attack, and swiping to the side to avoid attacks from rival Pokémon.
If you want to get more coins, you have to buy them using in-app purchases or get free coins. Coins can be used to purchase more Pokéballs, incense, eggs, lure modules, and upgrades to your item bag and Pokémon storage. Luckily, all of these things, except for the bag and storage upgrades, can be found at Pokéstops.
Different locations and different times of day will bring out different forms of Pokémon. Nocturnal Pokémon will come out at night, and if you are near the water, you are more likely to find water type Pokémon, for example. Experiment with different types of locations (small towns, cities, suburbs, countryside, etc) to find a bigger variety of Pokémon.
