When you come to a random encounter, you’ll get a chance to either take the risk (such as go for the shiny object or jump for the fruit) or to avoid taking the risk. There’s a 50/50 chance of your Magikarp getting taken away, though, and if it does, it’s gone for good and you have to start over. So if you just gained a training level and want a better Magikarp right away, go for it; otherwise, avoid it.
You can play the game without having a data connection, but if you want to rename your Magikarp, you’re going to have to wait until you have a data connection. Once you do have a connection, you can go back and change its name at any time that you want to. Nicknames can be changd as many times as you want.
One of the best uses for your gems is to purchase friendship items. If you purchase a friendship item, a new Pokemon will come to your pond to play. Tap on it and you will receive free jump points. Its presence at each event will also give you a jumping distance bonus in any tournament that you enter, which significantly increases your chances of winning.
If you have faced an opponent before and then you face them again later on, you’ll be able to skip over the battle scene entirely and just get the results. This significantly speeds up your race through the league so that you can spend more time training your Magikarp and eating food for even more jump points.
Pick up every Pokeball that you see sitting in your pond. A red ball will have a small reward. A gold ball will have a much larger reward, sometimes including gems, but usually consisting of larger amounts of coins.
If you don’t want to retire your Magikarp just yet, then get it to the second to last level, upgrade the bar as high as you can without leveling up, and then play more leagues. Go through the leagues until your Magikarp can’t win anymore, then level it up to the max, play the last league level, and retire it. You’ll be able to gain more trainer levels without fishing out more Magikarp which will allow you to pull higher-level ones with more unique patterns.
