From the tutorial on, you’ll get to practice battle and its many aspects. You’ll be able to test out the auto-battle system, but generally, you shouldn’t use it unless you have a couple very weak enemies left and your team is strong. If you try to use the auto-battle right from the beginning, you’ll almost certainly lose, as the AI is not designed for a full battle.

Your commanders are important, but their equipment is even more important. You’ll get the chance to pull equipment out of chests every once in awhile, at which point you should work on giving it to your commanders who you either use regularly in battle, or are planning to use regularly. If you plan to switch out a commander, then switch their equipment with them unless you don’t care about their specific equipment.

Keep an eye on the health of your commanders during battle. When their health begins to get low, you can move them away from the enemies and heal them. One way to do it would be to use healing items, such as soybeans, to restore your HP. You can also use techniques from one character or another, if a character needs to either heal themselves or to heal a different character.

Use the terrain to your advantage during battles. If you stop inside of a temple, you’ll get a soybean or another healing item. If you end your turn in there, you’ll heal a bit. Retreat a troop and send them into a building if you need them to recover quickly.

Be sure to keep on upgrading both the buildings in your city, and upgrading the research. The research will power up tactics, weapons, max assignment costs, and earnings from buildings that give you both rations and silver coins. Research unlocks as your warlord level rises, so look for the newest unlocked research as soon as you gain a warlord level.
